Spaying (female)
Spaying your pet has many benefits. The procedure, which prevents female animals from becoming pregnant and reproducing, can help your dog, cat rabbit or ferret live a longer, healthier life.
By spaying your female pet, you’re protecting her against potentially deadly diseases, including bacterial infection of the uterus (pyometra), reproductive tract diseases, and several types of cancer. You also won’t have to worry about her going into heat. This means avoiding the mess that often accompanies the heat cycle in female dogs and the pacing and crying that happens with female cats. In addition, spaying your pet will help control the dog and cat overpopulation problem, keeping more animals out of shelters.
Spaying, which involves removing the ovaries (ovarectomy), or ovaries and uterus (ovario-hysterectomy) is a surgical procedure and is performed with the pet under general anesthesia. We strongly believe that the benefits of spaying outweigh the risks of the procedure and anesthesia. But we know that many owners are nervous about putting their pet under anesthesia. Well, rest assured, we have a healthy respect for surgery as well! Every pet health expert here does everything they can to make Martensville Veterinary Hospital both the best value and safest place to bring your dog, cat, rabbit or ferret for her spay! We follow strict AAHA protocols for pain control, anesthesia and and continually monitor your pet to help ensure her safety. At the Martensville vet clinic we have experienced, highly trained veterinarians- Katina Stewart DVM and Angela Oranchuk DVM that have each performed hundreds of successful spays and have each taken additional training in surgery, anesthesia, pain management and/or CPR. Your girl will be monitored with sophisticated equipment and a dedicated registered veterinary technologist (RVT) from beginning to end, and they also each have additional training in CPR. Our general anesthesia section also details some more of the things we do in Martensville to make our pet spays as safe and as pain free as possible.
